Plants need love all year round, not just during the summer. After all the fun in the summer sun, it is about time to prep for the winter. Now that Autumn is here, give your yard the love it needs to blossom next year. From chemical monitoring and weeding to overseeding and aeration, there are several steps you can take to get your yard ready for the cold months.

Keep reading to learn our winterizing tips to set your yard up for success.

1. Monitor the pH Levels

Check the pH level of your soil. Aim for around 7, which is purely neutral. If it is acidic or basic, it will start to thin. Add lime to acidic areas and sulfur treatment to alkaline areas. Learn more about pH levels here.

2. Go on a Weeding Spree

Prepare your yard for the toughest of seasons by getting rid of the competition. Protect your plants and grass by going on a weeding spree. Weeds will keep drawing moisture and nutrients away from your lawn and other plants, so pull them and dump them before the snows come.

3. Add Some Extra Strength

Fertilizers can add in the nutrients that plants need (and weeds try to steal). Pick up specially formulated winterizing fertilizers to give your lawn the potassium it will need during the winter. These special blends will support your plants during the extra stressful season. Make sure not to add too much as that will end up hurting your lawn.

4. Breath New Life into Your Lawn with Aeration

Everything could use a little extra support during this time of year. Aerate your lawn now before the weather gets too cold to bring in fresh air, nutrients, and water. The more you walk on your lawn, the more aeration will help it.

5. Overseed Your Lawn to Fill in the Gaps

Some of your grass may have thinned out over the season. Add extra grass seed to fill in the gaps. Try to spread the new see, cool-weather seeds, if possible, during the daytime.
